<p><em><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Is God using recent natural disasters to punish humanity?</span></strong></em></p>
<p>This is a difficult question. It cannot be answered by simply quoting a Bible passage. It requires a careful study of God's nature, how He relates to the natural world, and the link between humans, sin, and nature. These are huge theological topics that always lead to differences of opinion among scholars. Here are some aspects of the topic that appear to be clearly present in the Bible.</p>
<p>1. The Link Between Humans and Nature: When God made humans in His image and gave them dominion over the natural world, He set them apart from the rest of creation as unique (Genesis 1:26, 27). At that moment a close connection was established between humanity and nature. Creation was placed under the dominion of humans; creation's fate was to be determined by the choices and decisions of humanity. Humans, as God's representatives, were to rule over nature as God intended. The link between nature and humanity was so deep that upsetting the moral order of humans would upset the way the world functioned.</p>
<p>Once sin and evil entered into the world everything changed (Romans 5:12). Because of Adam's and Eve's rebellion, the rest of the natural world "was subjected to futility" (Romans 8:20). Humans and nature now both groan under the burden of evil and sin (verse 22). But the connection between humans and nature is also for good. Humanity's redemption includes the redemption of the natural world. Nature "will be delivered from the bondage of corruption" (Romans 8:21; cf. Isaiah 65:25).</p>
<p>2. God as Creator, Sustainer, and Preserver of the Natural World: The first thing the Bible tells us about God is that He created "the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). Apart from God everything else in the universe has to be labeled "created." This establishes a wide distance and distinction between God and His creation that is salvaged only through His love and the mediation of His Son.</p>
<p>Creation is by nature finite; only God is infinite. Therefore, God is the one who sustains the natural world. Left to itself the natural world would break down into chaos and cease to exist. Nature does not possess life in itself, so it cannot preserve itself. God through Christ is the one who holds it together and protects it (Nehemiah 9:6; Colossians 1:17). God not only sustains nature; He also preserves it. The existence of the natural world is threatened by the presence of evil powers within God's creation. So God fights against the forces of chaos, limiting their inroads into the natural world, promising to free it from its bondage to decay (Job 38:8-11; Psalm 107:29; Romans 8:21).</p>
<p>3. God, Natural Disasters, and Sin: Natural disasters are to be expected in a world of sin and evil. They are not the exception to the rule, they are the rule. What is unusual is that there aren't more of them. The "sometimes" presence of natural disasters tells us that God is still in control, sustaining and preserving nature.</p>
<p>That having been said, the fact that God opposes the forces of evil in the natural world does not mean that the link between human rebellion and the natural world has been totally broken. The Bible teaches that human sin weighs heavily on the natural world, allowing for an increase of evil's invasion into it (e.g., Genesis 3:17, 18; Leviticus 18:25; Isaiah 24:3-6; Jeremiah 12:4). Humans, through rebellion and indifference toward God, can push Him out of their lives and disrupt the order He created in the natural world. When that happens God's sustaining and preserving power in the natural world is significantly reduced. By distancing themselves from God humans have also strengthened sin's grip on the natural world. The result is chaos and disorder (e.g., Psalm 104:29, 30). The increase of rebellion, apostasy, and sin in the last days will result in an increase in natural disasters.</p>
<p>But there is another dimension of the interaction between God and natural disasters: Sometimes God uses nature to enforce His will on humanity. When that happens, He usually intends to limit human sin and open new possibilities for His creatures (e.g., Genesis 6:5-8; Amos 4:6-11). Correctly identifying those particular cases is very difficult.</p>

<p>When looking at the vast array of Bibles, many Christians wonder how to select the best one for them.</p>
<p>Walk into the average Christian bookstore and you will find many different Bible translations available for purchase. </p>
<p>Since most of us are unable to read Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek, we are dependent on language scholars to translate the Word of God for us. Knowing this, we are privileged to have a number of different English translations available as they make it possible for us to have more direct access to God’s Word than most Christians in earlier centuries possessed.</p>
<p>However, if Bible translation is just a matter of converting ancient languages into English, why are there so many different versions available? After all, the Canadian government regularly translates documents from French into English and vice versa without much difficulty. Why should translating the Bible be any different? The answer is that, unlike modern-day languages such as French or Spanish, the biblical languages of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, are fundamentally different from the English language. As a result, there is more to Bible translation than simply converting individual words from the original language into our language.</p>
<p>For example, a literal word-for-word translation from Greek into English of John 3:16 reads: “For thus loved God the world, so as the Son the only begotten he gave, that everyone believing in him may not perish but may have life eternal.” As we can see, a simple word-for-word translation is virtually unreadable to most people. In order to achieve a functional translation, the grammatical structure needs substantial modification.</p>
<h3><strong>Types of Translations</strong></h3>
<p>At the risk of oversimplification, there are three main categories of Bible translations. </p>
<ol>
	<li><strong>Essentially literal</strong>: These translations retain much of the form and structure of the original language and provide a word-for-word translation to the greatest degree possible. Translations in this category include King James Version (KJV), New King James Version (NKJV), New American Standard Bible (NASB), English Standard Version (ESV), and the Revised Standard Version (RSV).</li>
	<li><strong>Dynamic equivalence</strong>: These translations employ a “thought-for-thought” approach that conveys the essential meaning of the original authors. Concepts and metaphors less widely known to modern-day readers are frequently rephrased. Translations in this category include New International Version (NIV), Today’s New International Version (TNIV), New International Reader’s Version (NIrV), New Living Translation (NLT), New Century Version (NCV), and the Contemporary English Version (CEV).</li>
	<li><strong>Free paraphrase</strong>: Paraphrases take great liberty with the biblical text and seek to convey the meaning of the author using contemporary phrases and metaphors. The best-known paraphrases are The Clear Word (Clear Word), The Living Bible (TLB), and The Message (Message).</li>
</ol>
<p>Within each of these categories, there is significant variation. For example, the NIV is generally more literal than other dynamic equivalent translations, while The Message makes bigger departures from the original text than The Living Bible or The Clear Word. Nevertheless, these categories are a useful way for the average Bible reader to differentiate from the plethora of translations available.</p>
<p>Illustrating the different translation approaches when translated strictly word for word, Romans 8:8 reads as follows: “And the [ones] in the flesh being God to please cannot.” Here is how it reads using representative translations from each of the three categories:</p>
<h4><strong>Essentially literal:</strong></h4>
<ul>
	<li>“Those who are in the flesh cannot please God” (ESV).</li>
	<li>“So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God” (KJV).</li>
</ul>
<h4><strong>Dynamic equivalence:</strong></h4>
<ul>
	<li>“Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God” (NIV).</li>
	<li>“That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God” (NLT).</li>
</ul>
<h4><strong>Free paraphrase:</strong></h4>
<ul>
	<li>“Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God. That person ignores who God is and what he is doing. And God isn’t pleased at being ignored” (Message).</li>
</ul>
<p>The essentially literal translations are closest to the original text as they take the actual Greek words and basically rephrase them into grammatically acceptable English. In contrast, the dynamic equivalence translations replace the word “flesh” with “sinful nature” and make explicit that which is only implied in the original, namely that those who do not please God are under the control of the sinful nature.</p>
<p>The basic meaning is preserved although some key words are added and deleted. The Message takes what it considers to be the main idea, namely that anyone absorbed in self is displeasing to God, and amplifies this point while omitting any direct reference to the flesh or sinful nature.</p>
<h3><strong>What Should We Use?</strong></h3>
<p>Clearly, there are substantial differences between the different translations. The old saying that one Bible is as good as another simply does not hold true. With this in mind, it is my belief that Christians are best off using an essentially literal translation, particularly for in-depth study and public reading. Since all Scripture is inspired by God (2 Tim. 3:16), we should seek to read translations that reflect the Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek words to the greatest degree possible. Jesus Himself said, “not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law” (Matt. 5:18, ESV), and we should be cautious about translations that alter the inspired Word of God.</p>
<p>Another reason for concern is that, in cases where there is more than one possible meaning of a biblical text, Christians reading dynamic equivalent translations or free paraphrases are frequently given only the translators’ interpretation. Here’s an example from Mark 9:24:</p>
<p>“Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, ‘I believe; help my unbelief!” (ESV).</p>
<p>“Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, ‘I do believe; help my unbelief’” (NASB).</p>
<p>These essentially literal translations preserve the father’s somewhat confusing statement basically as he said it. When the father said, “I believe; help my unbelief,” did he mean that he wanted Jesus to help him overcome his unbelief or was he affirming that he already believed and wanted even more faith? We don’t know for sure, but it’s something we need to grapple with when we read the text. However, notice how dynamic equivalent translations and free paraphrases deal with this verse.</p>
<p>“Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (NIV).</p>
<p>“Right away the boy’s father shouted, ‘I do have faith! Please help me to have even more’” (CEV).</p>
<p>“The father cried out, ‘Teacher, I do believe, but please help me overcome my unbelief! Please give me the kind of faith I need!’” (Clear Word).</p>
<p>The wording provided by these translations is so different because they present varying interpretations of what the father really meant to say. When the translator does the hard work of interpreting challenging passages, individual Christians are deprived of the opportunity to think for themselves. The reality is that Christians should expect to wrestle with difficult Bible passages since this is an important part of spiritual growth.</p>
<h3><strong>The Transforming Word</strong></h3>
<p>All Christians and church congregations need to give careful consideration to which translation(s) they wish to use for personal and public reading. It is my conviction that we have become too dependent on Bible translators to do our interpreting for us. For those of us unable to read Hebrew and Greek, essentially literal translations are the closest thing we have to the original text of Scripture. Let’s use them more regularly in our personal study and public readings, without going to the extreme to think that God spoke to Jeremiah in King James Version English. He spoke—and the prophet did not only hear and jot it down in Hebrew. His life was never again the same, because God’s Word is not only inspired, but also meant to convict, correct, and transform you and me—literally, dynamically, and freely.</p>

<p>The term “spirit of prophecy” occurs only once in the Bible, namely in Revelation 19:10; but the readers in John’s days knew exactly what John meant by this phrase. They were familiar with this expression, which was frequently used in the Aramaic translation of the Old Testament. For example, Genesis 41:38 in the Aramaic paraphrase of the Old Testament text says: “Pharaoh said to his servants, ‘Can we find a man like this in whom there is the spirit of prophecy from before the Lord?’” And in Numbers 27:18 the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua, son of Nun, a man who has within himself the spirit of prophecy, and lay your hand on him.”</p>
<p>For the early Christians the “spirit of prophecy” was a reference to the Holy Spirit, who imparts the prophetic gift to God’s messengers. This also becomes evident when we compare Revelation 19:10 with Revelation 22:8, 9.</p>
<p>The situation in both passages is the same. John falls at the feet of the angel to worship him. The words of the angel’s response are almost identical, yet the difference is significant. In 19:10, the brethren are identified by the phrase “who have the testimony of Jesus.” In 22:9, these brethren are simply called “prophets.”</p>
<p>According to the principle of interpreting Scripture with Scripture, this leads to the conclusion that “the spirit of prophecy” in 19:10 is not the possession of church members in general, but only of those who have been called by God to be prophets. That this is not purely an Adventist interpretation can be seen from the writings of other scholars. Lutheran scholar Hermann Strathmann, for example, says concerning the phrase “testimony of Jesus” in 19:10: “According to the parallel 22:9 the brothers referred to are not believers in general but the prophets…. This is the point of verse 10c. If they have the marturia Iesou [the testimony of Jesus], they have the spirit of prophecy, i.e., they are prophets …, like the angel, who simply stands in the service of the In summary, we can say that one of the identifying signs of the remnant church, which according to prophecy exists after the 1,260-day period, i.e., after 1798, is the testimony of Jesus, which is the spirit of prophecy, or the prophetic gift. The Seventh-day Adventist Church, from its very beginning, has believed that in fulfillment of Revelation 12:17 the spirit of prophecy was manifested in the life and work of Ellen G. White.</p>

We see hidden sins and defects in our characters that keep us from being the powerful witnesses He longs for us to be. Prayer draws us into an intimate relationship with Jesus. In prayer we open our minds to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We seek His wisdom, not our own.</p>
<p>Prayer also enables God to work more powerfully than if we had not prayed. The conflict between good and evil is a battle between the forces of the devil and the forces of righteousness. The struggle is real. Thousands upon upon thousands of good and evil angels are involved. The Bible's last book, Revelations, describes the battle this way: "Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back" (Revelation 12:7).</p>
<p>One-third of the angels in heaven rebelled against God (Revelation 12:4). The forces of evil bring disappointment, disease,disaster and death to our world. The forces of righteousness bring joy, peace, health, and life.</p>
<p>As we pray, God pours out His Spirit through us. Prayer enables God to help those in need. Two verses in 1 John explain why prayer is so effective. The apostle declared, "This is the confidence we have in approaching him" (1 John 5:14). Our confidence is not in our prayers. Our confidence is not in our faith.Our confidence is in God. John continued, "If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him" (1 John 5:14,15).</p>
